Chronic Pain Project
GOIB-PINEM23
Be part of an international, multicenter, scientifically-driven project to transform clinical practice into solid evidence
Our goal: to understand what really works for which patients —
and use that evidence to personalize treatment,
reduce unnecessary procedures, and improve quality of life.
THE SCIENTIFIC CHALLENGE
Why chronic pain needs real data
Chronic pain affects nearly 1 in 4 adults, with an average duration of more than 6 years.
It leads to repeated procedures, long-term medication exposure, mental health impact (depression and anxiety are reported in over 20% of patients with chronic pain), and a high use of healthcare resources — primary care, pain units, emergency services, imaging, interventions.
Despite this burden, most of the clinical information generated in routine care is never analyzed, never shared, and never used to improve decision-making.
We are changing that.

study highlights
From scattered pain data to actionable clinical evidence
More than 50 specialists.
Multidisciplinary approach.
Real clinical settings.
Feder co-funded initiative.
Phase I: Consensus & Framework
Clinical Consensus and MICP Definition
Development of the Minimum Information for Chronic Pain (MICP) through a Delphi methodology, engaging pain specialists, traumatologists, and rehabilitation experts to define standardized clinical variables.
Phase II: Real-World Data Collection
Multicenter Data Capture
Implementation of the MICP model across multiple hospitals and pain units, integrating structured data directly from daily clinical practice.
Phase III: Analysis & Artificial Intelligence
Real-World Evidence Generation
Aggregation and advanced AI-based analysis of multicenter data to identify treatment response patterns, safety indicators, and predictive factors.
Phase IV: Dissemination & Impact
Clinical Validation and Scientific Output
Validation of results, publication of findings in high-impact journals, and integration of the evidence into clinical protocols to improve patient outcomes.
Meet the clinical coordination team
This national Real-World Evidence (RWE) project is coordinated by BioSmartData, in collaboration with leading specialists in Pain Medicine, Traumatology, Rehabilitation, and Rheumatology from hospitals across Spain.
It aims to transform how chronic pain is evaluated and treated — turning fragmented data into actionable clinical evidence that helps define the Minimum Information for Chronic Pain (MICP).
- Supported by over 40 clinical experts across 11 national centers
- Developed under a Delphi consensus methodology
- Integrated into daily clinical practice with minimal disruption
- Generates Real-World Evidence (RWE) to optimize treatment and resource use
- Aligned with EU MDR, GDPR, ENS, and the upcoming AI Act for trustworthy health data use
This project represents a unique step forward in understanding, standardizing, and improving chronic pain management through real data and multidisciplinary collaboration
HOW YOUR IMPACT COUNT
From data to measurable change
Every data point contributes to a better understanding of chronic pain.
Your participation helps create
evidence-based standards that improve treatments, optimize healthcare resources, and enhance patients’ quality of life.
Impact includes:
Clinical Insight: Define the Minimum Information for Chronic Pain (MICP) to unify assessment criteria nationwide.
Health System Efficiency: Identify which treatments shorten recovery time and reduce healthcare costs.
Collaborative Science: Join a multidisciplinary network shaping future clinical guidelines.
Societal Value: Contribute to tackling one of Europe’s most costly and disabling health challenges.
